Bottles, Drums and Cartons that have previously contained hazardous materials are increasingly difficult to dispose of. Changes come into force in October 2007 emanating from the Landfill Regulations introduced in 2002, whereby no landfill site will be able to accept waste unless it has been pre-treated. Pre-treatment means;

1. it has undergone a physical, thermal or biological process including sorting that
2. also changes the characteristics of the waste, and
3. must do so in order to reduce its mass, or reduce its hazardous nature, or facilitate its handling, or enhance its recovery.

In practice for most people this will mean that they sort for separate collection those items easily recyclable.
